Music festival was started in France in 1982. Since 1995 it has become a European-wide festival and takes place in several towns within the same timeframe. The festival is symbolically connected to summer solstice and means to be a free-access popular festival performing all music genres and opened to anyone who wants to play in front of an audience.

It is, above all, an open-air festival as it takes place in streets, squares, public parks.  It gives also the opportunity to open different places (museums, hospitals, public buildings) to music, to encourage meeting and interchange among young music players and to invite some traditional music institutions (such as orchestras, opera houses, permanent choruses) to give up their usual location and welcome different music genres.

In Sanremo, the city of music, the Festival found its natural location. Born nearly “on the sly” in 2005, it has rapidly gained a huge popularity thanks to the attendance of native performers and groups as well as nation-wide famous artists such as, for instance, Simone Cristicchi, the winner of 57th Italian Song Festival, who opened the last Music Festival. Since then and every year, the Music Festival is opened by the winner of the Sanremo Song Festival.

During the past years different places, as civic museum and parks, hosted music meetings and performances and were joined by the attendance of some prestigious foundations such as Sanremo Symphony Orchestra.
